Will Covid Vaccine Affect Your Period?

Published

on

A post that reads, “Women above 18 years of age should not take coronavirus vaccine five days before and after their menstrual cycle as their immunity is very less during periods” went viral on all social media platforms.

There are many doubts regarding coronavirus vaccine and now one more added to it. The centre announced that those who are above 18 of years of age can take their vaccines from May 1st.

The government on Saturday appealed to people to not to believe in the fake news that are circulating in the social media. The PIB shared a post with caption, “#Fake post circulating on social media claims that women should not take #COVID19Vaccine 5 days before and after their menstrual cycle. Don’t fall for rumours! All people above 18 should get vaccinated after May 1.”  Here is the tweet.

Alice Lu-Culligan and Dr Randi Hutter Epstein at Yale School of Medicine wrote in the New York Times that, “So far, there is no data linking the vaccines to changes in menstruation.”

Dr.Munjal V Kapadia tweeted that, “A lot of patients messaging me asking if it’s safe/ effective to take the vaccine during their period. Some silly WhatsApp rumour has spooked everyone. Your period has no effect on the vaccine efficacy. Take it as soon as you can. Spread the word, please.”

Dr Vaishali Joshi, obstetrician and gynaecologist at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital, Mumbai speaking to a newspaper said that, “There has been no data to validate the claim that Covid-19 vaccine affects the periods. This has originated from social media where people are sharing their own personal experiences. All international advisory bodies and organisations have not acknowledged it. Also, it’s important to note that one doesn’t need to reschedule vaccination date depending on the presence of periods. All the women who have crossed 18 years of age irrespective of their periods, hormonal status should get vaccinated.”

Breastfeeding mothers can also take vaccine.
