Will Badvel bypoll cement the alliance between BJP, TDP, JSP?

Published by Jayadev k On October 30, 2021

It looks like the by-election of Badvel assembly constituency will mark the change in Andhra Pradesh politics! If one were go by the way things are shaping up in Budvel, it is for sure Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asked for the help of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Jana Sena Party (JSP) to give a tough fight to ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) candidate.

And the mediator between the patch-up between TDP and BJP is none other than film star-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan and his party JSP. Yes, this is the talk of the state and if one were to believe the local leaders, BJP is happy with the way it got support from TDP and also its alliance JSP, so this friendship might again lead to formation of the alliance that will take on the mighty YSRCP!

After sudden demise of YSRCP MLA Dasari Venkata Subbaiah, the seat fell vacant and this led to by-election. As tradition of YSRCP, deceased leader’s wife Dasari Sudha was fielded as the candidate for Badvel constituency. Meanwhile opposition party, TDP decided not field any candidate as mark of respect for the deceased MLA.

But BJP decided to field its candidate in the by-election. Initially everyone thought BJP-JSP would field Jana Sena candidate, but the party chief, Pawan Kalyan decided not to have JSP candidate and supported BJP. Though BJP could identify a candidate to take on YSRCP’s Sudha, neither he nor his party has any kind of ground support.

To a large extent JSP workers supported the campaign, but the problem arose when BJP had to appoint polling agents at all the polling booths of the constituency. “It is being said that BJP doesn’t have the numbers in their support to even appoint polling agents, and JSP doesn’t have people who are experienced in the job. So it is said that BJP has approached TDP to ask its workers to take up the job on behalf of BJP,” said a senior TDP leader in Vijayawada.

Will this helping between BJP and TDP be a one-time affair? Will this friendship at Badvel constituency lead to a political alliance? According to political analysts, this is beginning of a friendship that will turn into alliance a year before the next assembly elections. “It is being said that TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu had indicated to BJP leaders in Delhi that they were willing to support its candidate in Badvel by-election, so now it is not just polling agents, TDP has instructed its workers to vote for BJP,” mentions a senior political journalist.
