Who Is Bishop Franco Mulakkal Acquitted In Kerala Nun Rape Case
Bishop Franco Mulakkal who was arrested in a case of raping a nun between 2014 and 2016 was acquitted by the Kottayam Additional Sessions Court today.
Bishop said, “Praise the lord. I prayed for the judgement of God to come be the judgement of the court. I am missionary who need to show the world that there is god and god’s power. I got a chance to do that. Irrespective of religion and caste everyone understood that there is power in prayer. Those who love and stand by truth were with me. People will throw stone only at a tree with fruits. I am proud of that. Continue to pray.”
Former Kottayam SP Harishankar who headed the probe in Kerala nun rape case expressed shock over the verdict given in a case against Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who was acquitted in the Kerala nun rape case of 2018.
He said that, “There has been no lapse from the part of the prosecution. All the witnesses came. Without any serious loopholes, the victim was cross-examined for nine continuous days. There was a great deal of medical and corroborative evidence. Neither the prosecution nor the defense witnesses were able to establish much ground. We were all expecting a conviction in the case until this morning. This decision comes as a shock.”
What is the case about?
A 45-year-old nun raised a complaint againt Bishop Franco Mulakkal and said that he had called her to his room at night and forced her to have unnatural sex with him. The nun had alleged that the bishop raped her 13 times between 2014 and 2016. An FIR was filed at the Kuravilangad police station in June, 2018 by a nun belonging to the order of the Missionaries of Jesus of the Catholic Church.
Who is Franco Mulakkal?
Bishop Franco Mulakkal is from the village of Mattom in Kerala’s Thrisur district. In 1990, he was ordained as a priest, and in 2009, he was appointed as an auxiliary bishop. In 2013, he was appointed Bishop of Jalandhar.
