Telangana: Post-Covid pandemic and lockdowns, people are trying to get back to normalcy with the changes in lifestyle as well as new conditions. The fuel prices have shot up indiscriminately and there has been no reaction across the country for hike in prices. Similarly daily provisions and vegetables too have become very costly for a common man. Now it is the turn of Telangana government to look at raise price of electricity!

According to media reports, there has been a loss in revenue earnings for the state. The loss of Rs 21,500 crore between 2021-22 and 2022-23 has been forecasted. This gap in revenue earnings were declared by Telangana power distribution companies and fill this gap they have submitted proposals to the government. It is being said that Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and his cabinet will soon approve the proposal for hiking the electricity tariff!
Power tariff hike is likely to come into effect from April 2022 after conducting public hearings by the Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TSERC). Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) and Telangana State Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSNPDCL) submitted their aggregate revenue requirement (ARR) proposals to the TSERC but did not submit power retail tariff revision details like the hiked amount and category.
TSERC chairman T Sriranga Rao said the power utilities estimated their revenue requirement for 2022-23 at Rs 53,053 crore, while requirement for 2021-2022 was Rs 45,618 crore. The state government has been providing subsidy for various categories of consumers, especially for the agriculture sector at Rs 5,652 crore each year.
Earlier the discoms did not file the tariff proposals as per the provisions of the regulations. TSERC has requested to submit the proposals comp0letely and it is now believed that the discoms have submitted the tariff hike proposal for each sector and that proposal would be submitted to the CM for his final nod. It is understood that the state government was likely to take a decision on hike of power tariff in a couple of days!
