Finally, defending champions West Indies got a win in the T20 World Cup 2021. The Caribbeans have tasted their first victory in the tournament, against Bangladesh. It was a nerve-wracking thriller which went down till the last ball and finally, West Indies won by 3 runs. With this win, the Windies keep their hopes alive in the tournament.
Bangladesh completely failed in chasing a low target of 143. They lost the wickets of the openers Naim and Shakib inside the powerplay. Litton Das (44) and Soumya Sarkar then settled the chase. When the momentum is shifting towards Bangladesh, Akeal Hosein got the wicket of Sarkar. Mushfiqur Rahim fell soon as well. The entire responsibility then fell on the shoulders of Das and skipper Mahmudullah (31*). Andre Russell needed to defend 13 runs in the last over and the star all-rounder shined well by giving away only 9 runs in that over. Thus, Bangladesh managed to score 139/5 by the end of its innings.
West Indies also didn’t have a great time with the bat. It lost the wickets of Gayle, Lewis and Hetmyer within seven overs. At one point, the score was 32-3. Then, Roston Chase (39) built the innings along with Kieron Pollard and Nicholas Pooran (40). The latter’s quick-fire innings of 40 runs of 22 balls gave Windies the much-needed momentum. Jason Holder’s blistering knock, in the end, helped West Indies score 19 runs in the last over and post a total of 142/7.
With three losses in three games, Bangladesh is now virtually out of contention. It will play its next game against South Africa on November 2. On the flip side, West Indies will take on Sri Lanka in its next game on November 4.
