Australia has become the winners of the T20 World Cup 2021! From entering the tournament as underdogs to becoming the champions, it has been an incredible journey for the Aussies. In the final match held against New Zealand, Australia won by 8 wickets and lifted the trophy. This is the first time they have won the T20 World Cup. On the flip side, it was another heartbreak for the Kiwis.
While chasing a target of 173, the Aussies were never in a panic mode and started attacking the Kiwi bowlers right from the beginning. Though opener Aaron Finch got out early, David Warner (53) and Mitchell Marsh (77*) have kept Australia alive in the chase. They dominated the New Zealand bowlers throughout the innings and made the match one-sided. Even though Warner got out in the 13th over, no harm was done for his team as both Marsh and Glenn Maxwell (28*) finished things off in style. As a result, Australia made 173/2 in 18.5 overs.
New Zealand didn’t get a good start after losing the toss and coming in to bat first. Last match’s hero Daryl Mitchell got out for a mere score of 11 runs. Then, Kane Williamson (85) and Martin Guptill (28) settled the innings by making a partnership of 48 runs. When Guptill got out, Glenn Phillips (18) gave support to Williamson. The New Zealand skipper played exceptional innings. Especially, the way he smacked Mitchell Starc proved Williamson’s batting prowess. With the help of Kane’s heroic knock, New Zealand made a score of 172/4 in 20 overs.
But however, all those efforts ended up in vain. After losing the 2015 and the 2019 World Cup finals, this is another heartbreaking defeat for New Zealand in the final of an ICC tournament.
