People getting jabs as a part of India’s new vaccination drive
Under the new vaccination policy, the Indian government has inoculated 85.86 lakh doses on day one as per the new inoculation strategy in which the Central Government provided free vaccines against COVID-19 to adults across states.
Starting from January 16, this is the highest number of doses administered in a day not only in India but also in the entire world, India has inoculated a record-breaking number of vaccination shots. This comes on a day when India logged 53,256 new coronavirus infections, the lowest in 88 days
PM Narendra Modi tweeted saying this record-breaking vaccination is gladdening. “Today’s record-breaking vaccination numbers are gladdening. The vaccine remains our strongest weapon to fight COVID-19. Congratulations to those who got vaccinated and kudos to all the front-line warriors working hard to ensure so many citizens got the vaccine. Well done India!” Tweeted Modi.
DuringMay, more than 7.9 crore vaccines were available for the inoculation drive. In June, these were ramped up to 11.78 crores. The Centre’s new policy came days after Supreme Court slammed the ongoing vaccination drive for the 18-44 age group and called it “arbitrary and irrational.”
Hence the free vaccines were procured by the central government free of cost to states and Union Territories.
