MLC elections in AP: Jagan made his choice already?

It is elections time once again in Andhra Pradesh! There is hectic activity seen in the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) office in Tadepalli and also near the Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s camp office for the three MLC seats under the MLAs quota. The three seats will be obviously going to ruling YSRCP because they have the majority number of seats, but interestingly, who will be given the chance by Jagan is the big question.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) released the schedule in New Delhi for conducting elections to the MLC posts in the quota of the legislators in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It may be recalled that BJP state president Somu Veerraju, Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council chairman Mohmmad Sharif and MLC Chinna Govinda Reddy completed their tenure on May 31. But due to pandemic the election of was not held ad it has been now scheduled by ECI.

The election for three seats will be unanimous and according to YSRCP sources Jagan has already made his choices and will shortly announce the names of the three candidates who will become MLCs in AP. In all probabilities, the names of candidates will be officially announced on Wednesday by the party, said the sources. Notification for the elections has been released today and within couple of days the names of probable MLCs will be clear.

Meanwhile guess work is playing a major role in AP and people are busy making speculations. It is already a known fact that Jagan has promised to renew MLC for Kadapa’s Goverdhan Reddy. So the competition is for the two seats. Out the two seats, it is being said, the YSRCP chief was considering one seat to be allotted to Muslim minority from Kurnool and another to a politician’s son from Srikakulam district. “The selection process is more or less over and an official announcement is pending from the party. But this doesn’t mean that people stop making guesses as well as aspirants stop trying for a chance,” said senior YSRCP leader in Vijayawada.

On the other hand, names of former MLA Marri Rajasekhar, senior YSRCP leader Ummareddy Venkateshwarulu and government advisor in public affairs matters Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy is making around the YSRCP head office. At the same breath the sources say that these three might get MLC nominations under local bodies quota! So until the official list is out the guess game will continue.
