IPL 2022: Even as the decision with regards to Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket tournament is to be taken by the BCCI, there is one important decision that has to be taken by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team management. It is regarding the captain of their franchisee! Since ViratKohli has taken a decision to step down from the ever failing RCB team, now everyone’s eyes are on who will lead RCB now?
Adding fuel to the fire, the star player of RCB AB de Villers has also retired from cricket. Now the challenge for RCB team management is to identify and mentor a captain for the team and select right performers during the next auction.Interestingly it is not just RCB which is in search for their captain as many as 3 franchises, including Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, are yet to officially announce their captains. It is expected that the three franchises might wait until the mega auction is over to decide on their next captain.
All eyes are on RCB as the former finalists are looking to find ViratKohli’s successor for the captain’s role. Notably, the former India captain quit as the skipper of the franchise after the end of IPL 2021. Kohli’s tenure came to an end without him being able to lead the side to glory as RCB were knocked out in the play-offs for the second successive season last year.
RCB have retained only 3 players, including captainViratKohli (Rs 15 crore), Glenn Maxwell (Rs 11 crore) and Mohammed Siraj (Rs 7 crore). While the Australian all-rounder can be considered for the captaincy role, considering his success as Melbourne Stars’ skipper in the Big Bash League, it remains to be seen whether RCB take that route.
With KL Rahul joining the Lucknow Super Giants and HardikPandya set to captain the new Ahmedabad franchise, RCB are likely to bid for ShreyasIyer who is a frontrunner to replace Kohli as the new captain of the Bangalore-based franchise. RCB can also bid for David Warner, who parted ways with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise after a forgetful season in the 14th edition of the cash-rich league.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra weighed in on the captaincy options of the RCB franchise ahead of the mega auction. Though Chopra feels RCB can consider Iyer as an option, the former Indian opener believes Bangalore should go after Jason Holder at the mega auction. Chopra also believes Glenn Maxwell is an ideal candidate to become the new captain of the Kohli-starrer franchise.
