Indian Army Day 2022: History, Significance, Quotes, Messages
Every year, India celebrates its ARMY DAY on January 15. It commemorates Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa (K. M. Cariappa), who had been Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. General Cariappa took over the position from Britain’s General Francis Bucher, in 1949, who was the last British Commander-in-Chief of India. The Indian Army which was formed in 1895 was under British rule before India got Independence in 1947. After India gained Independence, the nation received its first-ever Indian chief.
General Cariappa was designated as Field Marshal after heading the Indian army during the 1947 Indo-Pak war over Kashmir. This title is bestowed to the Indian Army’s highest-ranking officer, and Cariappa was the second to receive it, after General Sam Manekshaw.
Many brave hearts will be honoured on the 74th Indian Army Day, and an Army parade will be held in Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi. Veterans who have received the Param Vir Chakra and the Vir Chakra attend the event while many more get Gallantry awards and Sewa Medals for their service. The Indian Army achieved several achievements last year, but unfortunately lost India’s first Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, in a helicopter crash in late December.
