The general body meeting of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elected council will be held on December 18. The council meeting which was to be held much earlier has been postponed for various and finally it looks like Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi is getting ready to face the wrath of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and will have to answer lots of questions.

Earlier, the Mayor chaired the first meeting of the 14-member standing committee where GHMC Commissioner Lokesh Kumar and other senior officials were present. The ‘powerful’ committee was meeting for the first time after the election. The delay was attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic and the model code for MLC polls.
She told the media that the standing committee members had raised issues like not lifting of garbage in their respective areas and the condition of garbage-carrying vehicles. The general body meeting will start at 10 a.m. and could go on till 5 pm, she added. “We have started to receive questions and we will give the answers to the corporators. We can discuss all these issues in a friendly manner without resorting to any arguments or rushing to the well. I am ready to listen to any number of grievances raised by members and will ensure answers are given,” she said.
On November 23, scores of BJP corporators and party workers attacked the Mayor’s office at Tank Bund Road. BJP corporators barged into the Mayor’s office and damaged furniture, destroyed flower pots, cut cable wires, defaced the GHMC board. They also destroyed lamps, removed the nameplates of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor and broke glass panes. The BJP has been insisting that there is an urgent need to hold the council meeting as there several civic issues that need to be addressed.

Meanwhile it is understood that the ruling Telangana Rastra Samiti (TRS) is gearing up to counter BJP’s allegations and also expose the party unruly behaviour. The TRS also wants to highlight the point that the Union government indifferent attitude towards GHMC. All the TRS corporators have been given the task of highlighting the developmental works done by their government and mute the BJP in GHMC. Overall, it is going a bumpy meeting, will have to wait and watch for the outsome!
