Corona Scare: A new variant of Coronavirus, named B.1.1.529, has been spreading rapidly across South Africa. The scientists termed this variant as quite dangerous as it mutates into various forms and becomes resistant to the existing vaccines. It also increases transmissibility and shows severe symptoms. More than 100 cases of this variant were found in South Africa in the last one week. It has also spread across to the neighboring country Botswana. Amid these concerns, there are doubts raising over India’s tour to South Africa for a bilateral cricket series in December.

Team India is scheduled to leave for South Africa in early December. The series will begin with a Test match in Johannesburg on December 17. India will play three Test matches, three ODIs, and four T20Is as a part of this tour.
Meanwhile, due to the outbreak of the new coronavirus variant, it is being speculated that BCCI may withdraw from the tour. However, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal said that the tour will go as planned. Speaking in an interview with the NDTV, Arun said, “Yes, the tour is on. We are keeping a close watch.”
Currently, India A is touring South Africa for unofficial Test series. BCCI is keeping a close watch on the situation in South Africa. As of now, there are no plans to cancel the tour. But if the outbreak intensifies for the next few days, the series may get postponed or canceled.
